Taming the Anxiety Beast:
Understanding and Managing Anxiety

Audio Version

Anxiety isn’t just feeling nervous, it can feel like a beast sitting on your shoulder, constantly whispering worries and pulling you toward isolation. For many, it shows up as irritability, avoidance, or relentless “what if” thinking. We often call this the “anxiety beast.”

This beast doesn’t want to harm you; it wants to protect you from the unknown, warning of imagined dangers or past experiences where choices didn’t feel safe. But sometimes, its protection goes too far, keeping you from engaging with life fully.

Signs the Anxiety Beast Is Present

You might notice:

  • Excessive worry about decisions or outcomes
  • Avoiding social events, work, or new opportunities
  • Feeling tense, restless, or irritable
  • Struggling to trust your own judgment
  • Pulling back into isolation

Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward understanding anxiety as a signal, not a personal flaw.

Strategies to Manage Anxiety

  1. Name the Beast
Awareness is powerful. Naming your anxiety can help you separate it from your identity.
  2. Use Grounding Techniques
Breathing exercises, mindful observation, or sensory grounding can calm the nervous system.
  3. Take Small Steps Forward
Gradually re-engage in activities you’ve been avoiding. Small victories help weaken the beast.
  4. Seek Professional Support
Therapy and, when appropriate, psychiatric medication management can provide tools and relief for ongoing anxiety.
