How to Help Teens with Self-esteem and Weight Issues

How to Help Teens with Self-esteem and Weight Issues

Between the fashion icons, movie stars and socialites (who can afford cosmetic enhancements) crowding the billboards, runways, glossy magazines, TV, Internet and the movies, it is so easy for a teenager to create an image of the “perfect look.” With all the biological changes happening during puberty, especially for the girls, weight gain is inevitable. The “perfect image” in their minds places pressure on them, making them insecure and suffering from low self-esteem.

Why Teenagers Need Assistance

Self-esteem is far from being static, particularly in young people. It means it is dynamically evolving during their adolescence. It also means you have time in your hands to help improve their self-esteem. It is during adolescence when they are forming a concrete sense of self, one of the important milestones of teen hood. Unfortunately, the process can be unduly hard, especially when burdened with self-esteem and weight issues.

Teens need to be guided through these issues because low self-esteem may develop negative feelings, such as self-loathing, poor body image, worthlessness, fears and anxiety, and insecurity. In addition, your child may also resort to desperate measures that can endanger their health – skipping meals, taking fad pills, forced vomiting, etc. The bleak scenario is becoming withdrawn and depressed that may persist into adulthood.

Recognizing the Signs

Is your teen overweight and suffering from low self-esteem? To help your child, know the signs of low self-esteem. The most visible manifestation is avoiding people, walking with their heads down and not making eye contact when being talked to. They are also quick on apologizing and using negative “I am” statements.

For some, a desperate attempt to fight low self-esteem and catch attention may cause him/her to tease and bully others, talk loud or brag excessively. Adolescents who feel worthless may also inadvertently seek attention and acceptance to the point of becoming subservient or letting others abuse them.

Finding the Right Help

Recognizing the manifestations that your child may be struggling with low self-esteem due to weight issues is just the first step. The next step is to consult an expert counselor specializing in teen issues to confirm your suspicion through a proper diagnosis. You can find the right counselor who is independently contracted with Carolina Counseling Services – Southern Pines, NC.
