Meeting Overwhelm Head-on as a Couple

Emotional overwhelm is a condition that many individuals will experience at one time or another. This is a state in which a person feels so totally overpowered by an issue or a situation, he or she may feel unable to rise above it. In couples where one partner is going through this condition, the relationship can be subjected to immeasurable stress.

Symptoms

People in emotional overwhelm frequently exhibit behaviors that are unusual for them. This can include marked irritability, crying, and/or lashing out seemingly without provocation. Emotional overwhelm can also include panic attacks and feelings of helplessness so intense the individual may feel unable to think or react rationally. Other signs may include extreme sadness, persistent anger, and/or being stressed over things that may not normally warrant concern. In extreme cases, the condition can persist for extended periods and may even inhibit a person from performing routine tasks.

When one partner goes through emotional overwhelm, it may be difficult for their other half to understand what they may be going through. This type of misunderstanding may even lead one to believe that their partner is simply overreacting. This can further increase anxiety and depression. Couples may want to seek professional help to move through the emotional overwhelm and address the impact it may be having on their relationship.

Common Causes

All individuals have built-in mechanisms to cope with life’s stresses, though sometimes individuals can go through periods where they may feel weighed down by issues confronting them. Emotional overwhelm is a condition that can develop from various causes; the most common of these causes may include pressures from work, financial problems, strained personal relationships, sleep deprivation, underlying health issues, and/or traumatic experiences.

To move through emotional overwhelm, it can be beneficial to get to the root cause of the condition and process the emotional, as well as the cognitive path, that has led to it. Some people might manage to get through this dark period with the help of supportive of friends and family. Some may find healing through hobbies, meditation, and the application of stress management strategies. Though these strategies are powerful and essential, many find they are not enough. Many couples find benefit in approaching overwhelm through the sound, evidenced based venues that professional counseling provide.

How Counseling Helps

Counseling can help individuals get in touch with their inner emotions and help them discover what has caused their emotional overwhelm. Counseling will not only help the affected person to work through his or her own issues; it will also give the other partner a chance to learn how to sustain his or her role as a major source of support.
