Responding to the Needs of Your Child with Oppositional Defiance Disorder

Responding to the Needs of Your Child with Oppositional Defiance Disorder

Many children can act out and test both limits and boundaries on certain occasions. Like other child behaviors, oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) may appear as a normal part of your child’s development process. You may find yourself wondering whether your child is just being a child when he argues, disobeys and becomes aggressive, or if they may need professional help to treat the symptoms of ODD.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder Red Flags

Many children may appear to have an oppositional nature, this may make it more difficult it more difficult to differentiate what is a normal behavior from what may be oppositional defiant disorder. Symptoms of ODD that you may want to be mindful of may include; excessive and persistent anger, temper tantrums or angry outburst that cause difficulties for your child. Other symptoms can include; becoming easily irritated, annoying people on purpose, blaming others for their mistakes, being often resentful of others and/or taking revenge when someone does something not to their liking.

These unusual behaviors may be an indicator of ODD, especially if the symptoms are causing considerable distress at home and school. Your child’s academic and social functioning may also be significantly affected. As a parent, it can be painful to see your child being hindered by a disorder, ODD can make it difficult for your child to make friends or participating in enjoyable activities. You may also find that your child deliberately exposes themselves to harmful situations.

Being Sensitive to Your Child’s Needs

ODD may improve over time, however, if your child’s condition persists you may need to take the appropriate steps to effectively manage this disruptive behavioral pattern. Regardless of how good a parent you are, treating ODD may not be within your parental skill. Early intervention by a professional can be important in preventing the disorder from taking a worse turn. When left untreated, the symptoms can continue into adulthood and significantly affect your child’s relationships, professional development and general wellbeing.

Finding a credible professional that can provide treatment for your child can be important. A licensed professional would be able to advise you in choosing effective treatment options for your child and your family. Such treatment options may include; Child Counseling, Parenting and Family Psychotherapy, and/or Anger Management. Treatment modalities can be individualized based on your child’s age, severity of their symptoms, and their unique circumstances.
