When is it Time to Seek the Help
of a Counselor or Therapist?

Audio Version

When you begin to experience discomfort that interferes in your daily life, this is generally a first sign to begin to consider seeking the help of a counselor or therapist. Therapy may not be your first tool in the toolbox that you reach for whenever life gets a little rocky, as it often does, but it can be a beneficial added resource.

In most instances it is best not to avoid therapy as an option to help alleviate any symptoms you may be experiencing. Often the longer we try to “wade” it out the more intense these feelings grow, which can cause undo complications in your life. The sooner you seek help the sooner you can begin to learn tools to help you to manage your symptoms.

If you are wondering when to see a counselor for in-person or online counseling, check out these five signs that say it is time for counseling:

  1. Feeling distressed or overwhelmed. It is not likely to be happy at all times, and it is natural to feel stressed. If you find that you are stressed more than you feel is manageable you may want to consider seeking the help of a trust therapist. Finding out what may be causing or contributing to your increased distress can help to alleviate any further discomfort.
  2. Increase in mood swings. Mood swings are a natural part of life, but if you begin to notice that you find yourself more irritable and frustrated than you have been in the past, this too may be a sign to seek additional support. Mood swings, irritability, and frustration are all common signs and symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and many other conditions.
  3. Your substance use has increased. When life becomes stressful, often as a way to relieve ourselves of these emotions and feelings we may resort to the use of other vices, such as alcohol, nicotine, and many other substances.
  4. You are feeling isolated and alone. The feeling of being all alone even while being amongst others can be daunting and often cause us to isolate more. This internal feeling of disconnect makes it that much more difficult to find pleasure in the many things you once enjoyed, such as – eating, socializing, being with your loved ones, hobbies.
  5. Feeling as though you are failing. Whether we have actually failed on something recently or if our emotions and feelings make us believe we are failing in areas in our life, this can cause intense distress. Often this can cause us to feel more sensitive to feedback from others, or reluctant to jump on new opportunities or projects due to self doubt and lack of motivation.

If any of the above experiences resonate with you, it is important to place yourself at the top of your priority list and consider seeking the help of a licensed professional. At Carolina Counseling Services – Southern Pines, NC we can help.
