Eight Ways to Tell Your Child
Needs Counseling

It can be common for young children to have occasional emotional and behavioral concerns as they grow and mature. Whether at home or at school, children face different challenges that can sometimes be short lived. These expected challenges can be frustrating for children, and parents, but they rarely interfere with their normal functioning.

There are times, however, when a child’s responses to challenges are something more. When these responses are extreme or impact functioning there may be cause to look deeper. Children can experience symptoms of behavioral health concerns just as adults can. If behaviors are symptoms that are impacting your child’s functioning it may be time to seek professional attention. Counseling can help.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published data revealing that 13 to 20 percent of American children experience a psychological, emotional, or behavioral disorder in a given year. Many of these symptoms can begin in childhood and may indicate conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety etc.

These disorders are characterized by serious changes in the ways children learn, behave, and emote. Behaviors and symptoms to be mindful of can include:

  1. Unpredictable mood swings. If your child is unusually sad and avoids interacting with people for more than two weeks, it may be a sign of emotional distress. Other mood-related indicators include irritability and excessive fear.
  2. Sudden behavioral changes. If your child exhibits a sudden change in behavior or personality, such as engaging in risky activities, it can be a strong indication that your child may be experiencing something more. Other signs may include poor performance in school, inattentiveness, and erratic sleeping patterns.
  3. Significant weight change. A sudden change in your child’s eating pattern, whether it is eating too much or having no appetite, can be an indicator of anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder.
  4. Trouble focusing. It can be normal for young children to have short attention spans due to their inherent curiosity. This tends to improve as they grow older. If your older child has difficulty concentrating or can’t sit still, they may benefit from counseling.
  5. Frequent complaints of physical pain. If your child often complains of physical ailments, it can be wise to address this with their doctor first. If symptoms persist and there is no medical cause, seeing a therapist may be beneficial to help identify any underlying concerns.
  6. Intense emotions. If your child expresses strong feelings or emotions about things that do not normally elicit such intense responses, they may benefit from counseling.
  7. Self-harming tendencies. An immediate evaluation may be warranted if your child behaves aggressively or destructively, or deliberately causes harm to self or others. These behaviors can be extremely upsetting, therapy can help.
  8. Substance abuse. Older children may begin experimenting with drugs or alcohol as an attempt to cope with emotional distress. If your child displays poor hygiene, hyperactivity, clumsiness, or seizures, it is important to act decisively by seeking professional intervention.

Early intervention can make a world of difference. If any of the warning signs above speak to you it may be beneficial to have an assessment completed by a therapist. Left untreated these symptoms can worsen and impact various areas of your child’s life, such as school, family, friendships etc.
